Five key charts showing the state of household finances in the UK
The Financial Fairness Tracker regularly asks 6,000 households across the country about various aspects of their finances. How many people have nothing in savings? How many households are behind with their bills? How many are struggling to pay for essentials? Below are five charts which show how people’s answers have changed over time, and the state of people’s finances today.
Currently struggling to pay for food or other essentials
Households reporting a 'constant struggle' to meet bills and credit commitments
Missed payment on at least one bill or credit commitment and currently owe money as a result
Nothing or less than one month’s income in savings
Thinking about my financial situation makes me anxious

About the research
The tracker is conducted by researchers from Opinium. A sample of 6,000 people across the UK are asked about their income, payment of bills, borrowing, debt, savings and other financial changes, including their ability to pay for essentials such as food.
A team from the Personal Finance Research Centre at the University of Bristol analyse the data and produce the findings. All editions of the Financial Fairness Tracker are available to download below.
* Until September 2022, the tracker was known as the 'Coronavirus Financial Impact Tracker'.
